Plasterboard and Gyprock Waste Removal

By November 14, 2017 Rubbish Removal

Building site waste removal is a primary concern in both commercial and residential sectors where space is often limited and organisation is paramount. And plasterboard and gyprock are two of the most common types of waste you’ll find on building sites around Sydney.

Both plasterboard and gyprock are 100% recyclable, and can be used to make new products such as paper and gypsum. It is very important to recycle this kind of waste in order to reduce the amount of trash that ends up in landfill. How do you do so? Get in touch with Sydney Rubbish Services, of course!

What Is Gyprock?

Gyprock, gypsum board, and plasterboard are similar terms for the same thing: gypsum plaster sandwiched between heavy paper layers.

Gypsum is a mineral that naturally occurs in sedimentary rock formations, though it can also be synthetically made. For most types of plasterboard, the gypsum rock is ground up to a fine powder, heated, mixed with water and compacted into boards.

Plasterboard and Gyprock Recycling

On average, around 20,000 tonnes of gyprock ends up in landfill each year from Sydney alone! And worldwide, this number is around 80 million. Seeing as gyprock is 100% recyclable, these numbers is far too high.

During the recycling process, most of the gypsum is ground down to a fine powder to be reused in more gyprock. The paper that binds the gyprock can also be recycled for use in various industries.

If gyprock does end up in landfill, it can be very detrimental to the environment. It takes up a lot of space that could be better put to use for depositing non-recyclable waste (as we know, landfill is running out fast). When dumped in landfill, gyprock releases produces hydrogen sulphide – a poisonous, flammable gas – into the atmosphere.

Lastly, by wasting such an easily recyclable material, we in turn must consume more natural resources. Think twice before dumping gyprock!
